A Study on the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of an Inverse Fluidized Bed


Abstract
The inverse fluidized beds(IFB) are important as bioreactors for aerobic wastewater treatment on account of their simple process and low energy consumption together with high mass and heat transfer rates. An IFB has many advantageous features
especially
at large scale. The key parameters for the design and operation of an IFB are the circulating liqued velocity. Gas holdup and bed expansion Therefore. A reliable and generalized circulation model has been presented.
The circulating liquid velocity in the downcomer section is shown to be dependent mainly on the downcomer to riser cross-sectional area ratio(Ad/Ar) and superficial gas velocity(Ug) as described by the following equation
Ud=5.9Ug0.85(Ad/Ar)-0.55
The equation can be applied to predicted circulating liquid velocity in the downcomer section of an IFB. The predicted values of circulating liquid velocity are compared with some available experimental data. There is reasonably good agreement
between
the model predictions and the experimental data.
The bed porosity or the concentration of particles in an IFB at a given set of operating conditions is the function of the particle fluid velocity and of other physical parameters that characterize the system(such as particle size. Shape, density
and
volume) The bed expansion in the downcomer section of an IFB increased with increasing gas flow rates.
